Bustin' feat. Oliver Cheatham

about

I recorded this song nearly 20 years ago (2003)

There's an interesting story of how this song came about. It was a wet Saturday afternoon and there was a knock at my door. It was Oliver.

I had the privilege of being Olivers PA for a number of years in the early 2000's and when he came into town, he'd often swing by my house. Back then I had just started out as an amateur producer, and without people like Oliver, I probably wouldn't be making music today... anyway, I digress.

At the time Oliver arrived, I was working on a piece of music I'd just made and it was playing very loud when he came through the door. 'What the fuck is that song playing??' he exclaimed as he bounced his head and clicked his fingers through my hallway.

'Got something to drink?' enquired Oliver as he danced some steps through my hallway and into my kitchen.
'Water, Coke, tea, coffee?' I replied.
'I said, have you got something to DRINK mother fucker?' he very directly responded, with a twinkle in his eye.
'Umm... I have some Gin that my mother left here... Want that?'

So I poured him a Gin and he sat there in my kitchen, nodding his head, singing melodies and generally marinating in the song. After a couple of jazz cigarettes, he told me to switch the mic on.

He had nothing written, so what you hear is just a freestyle and off the top of his head. I think we recorded 3-4 tracks of vocals and just kept layering lines here and there.

Sadly, Oliver passed in 2013. He was a dear friend and I miss his company and voice. If you didn't know, he was responsible for the classic 'Get Down It's Saturday Night'.... so a very underrated Legend.

I think he'd love that I'm putting this song out after all these years.

I took the cover photo back around the same time (2003) when he was invited to Monaco as Prince Alberts special guest at The World Music Awards... It was taken after we had consumed way to many free beverages. What a weekend that was!
